what is incontinence
If you are experiencing uncontrolled leakage of urine then you are suffering from some form of incontinence. But what is incontinence really. Well what it is not is a disease, it is a symptom of some underlying condition that is affecting the bladder or bowl or both. Incontinency can be the result of weakened pelvic floor muscles, childbirth problems or degenerative changes associated with aging. It can also be associated with pelvic surgery, birth defect or a number of diseases including MS, polio or simple infection. Millions suffer from incontinence but it is a predominantly female condition. It is estimated that one out of four women over the age of 18 will have at least one episode of incontinency in their lifetime. This is mostly that is due to problems that are common in the child birthing process which may result in an immediate incontinency but more likely will appear years after the birth. But women are not exclusively the sufferers of the condition. One in five adults over the age of 40 will experience an overactive bladder or urge incontinence. As we age the likelihood of having the condition increases. Almost 40 % of persons over 70 are incontinent and may suffer from a lack of control of both bladder and bowl. While these are pretty sad statistics that doesn't mean that there is nothing that can be done. Treatment for incontinency runs from the gamut from simple to surgery. There is no reason to let this condition interfere with the way you live your life. Hopefully now that you know what incontinency is you will seek out the information you need to deal with it.
